Like other readers who have commented here, I have a hard time processing what happens to animals…

But without minimizing the human costs of the assault — or her outrage over it — she has a keen eye for how the war has harmed her country’s animals. War Diary shows the damage more clearly than any of the books I’ve read about the attack, including Luke Harding’s Invasion, Serhiy Zhadan’s Sky Above Kharkiv, and Andrew Harding’s A Small, Stubborn Town.

Like other readers who have commented here, I have a hard time processing what happens to animals in war zones and during natural disasters. Isn’t it always the individual stories, in this case about animals left behind, that bring a human dimension to the inhumanity of war?
