It may amuse you to know that I’m reading your essay to a background of Chopin Etudes . . . More to the point, I find myself cheering, smiling, even laughing at your spot-on observations. You’re so right — there’s no value in turning the reading experience into a numbers game or taking seriously those lists of what I should read. On a related note, Anthony Lane’s recent essay in the New Yorker, “Can You Read a Book in a Quarter of an Hour?”, is largely about an app called Blinkist, which summarizes books for quick consumption. Whether or not you’re aware of the app, his essay is well worth reading.
