I don't know that it ever feels like cashmere, but your wonderful imagery re: contrived comforts resonates. Like you, I miss aspects of my upbringing (Jewish) , diluted over the years., especially when the grief from loss seems to accumulate. And I find myself as incensed as you are re: the self-righteous right-wing Christians who conveniently dismiss separation of Church and State in pushing their beliefs.
