The more I think about it, the more I can’t help believing how devastating the news about her turning a blind eye to her daughter’s abuse has to be for her fans. I think there’s so much to appreciate about Alice Munro’s stories but I’ve never quite understood the adulation, and your essay really spells it out so clearly. Now she’s on that list of artists whose personal lives cast a shadow on their art. Funny how Picasso is so often the first name that comes up when I have a conversation with friends about this very issue.
